Lambing Journal

On this page we’re excited to share with you a play by play of lambing season! Whether you’re planning to purchase a lamb and want to stay abreast of what might be available before the sales list is posted, or just like to ogle pictures of the cutest bouncy babies around, this is the place to be! Please refer to the Breeding Groups Page, Ewe Page and Ram Page for information pertaining specifically to the parents of the lambs and the goals of each particular cross.

Lambs are expected to arrive as early as April 7th, and we will continue to update this page until lambing is over.

March 12, 2008: T-Minus 26 days

Penelope is looking mighty pregnant! I’m hoping that she’ll throw twins again this year… She’s had a long run of singles, but twinned the last 2 times that she was bred. Daytona and Greytl are looking bigger, too, but of all the ewes, Penelope always looks the most freakishly wide during the last month of gestation… Her rumen itself is so broad that a vet once remarked  “looks like you’ve got a pregnant ewe! ” when Penelope hadn’t even been bred! Her lambs are always chunks, and I’d jump at the chance to keep a daughter of hers that had some of Felix’s more prolific genes. We also just discovered in ‘07 that she carries spotting! Hopefully Felix carries it as well -maybe from that Arfi influence on his sire’s side.

Bindi has developed a habit this winter of trying to climb up my body at feeding time, convinced that I have some alfalfa pellets tucked away somewhere just for her. It was endearing at first (sort of) but now it’s just plain obnoxious!

She has, without question, one of the top fleeces I’ve had on my farm, but she’s not quite up to par with the other sheep in terms of build. Felix’s AI influence should bulk up her lambs and their fleece should be fabulous, as Felix has a very lovely, thel-rich coat himself. And, of course, Bindi handled parasites very well as a lamb, so there is potential here for some good parasite resistant babes, too!

Nebula is holding her own at the bottom of the pecking order this winter. I’m very excited to see what she throws this spring. Although there is no spotting visible on her pedigree, she does have a tiny flash of white on her back, possibly indicating that she is a carrier.

Penelope and Zippity

April 5th, 2008: An Early Surprise!

Penelope gave birth this morning to a solid black ewe lamb, ID # LWF 400U. I’ve gotten nothing but rams out of her so far, so will definitely be keeping this pretty little girl, named “Zippity” for breeding. Wish I had been present for the birth, but Penelope always has things under control and got this little ewe off to a great start!

Stay posted  for updated pics as the other lambs arrive.
