Breeding Stock for Sale

Welcome to the sales list! For more information regarding our breeding program and specific traits that we are selecting for, please visit our Goals and Management page. All of the sheep listed for sale are healthy, sound and of quality that we would keep ourselves. Those that don’t make the cut become pets or are sent to the meat locker.

When do you Usually have Sheep for Sale?

Our lamblist is usually published in mid to late spring, available mature ewes may be posted throughout the summer and fall, and bred ewes in mid to late fall, (and occasionally in the winter as well.) Mature rams are generally posted in winter at a sale price, which reverts to full price when their lambs hit the ground in the spring. This sales list is routinely updated as sheep are sold.

Breeder Referrals

If you check this page only to find out that we are sold out of sheep, we will be more than happy to refer you to a breeder with similar quality stock available.

Visiting Our Flock

We encourage prospective buyers to arrange a visit to our farm in Putney, Vermont to get a close look at our breeding stock and to get a feel for our management system. Please feel free to be in touch about scheduling a farm visit.

Good News!

The VSFCP no longer requires enrollment in order to purchase 1st generation AI lambs… Anyone may now buy AI offspring! We will be starting a VAI program in fall 2008, and hope to have some F1 lambs available starting in Spring, 2009.

Reserving a Lamb (or two!)

Lamb reservations operate on a “first come, first served” basis.  First person to place their reservation gets first pick, second person to reserve gets to pick second etc.

Lamb Reservation Process:

· Contact us to let us know you are interested. We can help by suggesting the crosses most likely to produce lambs that will be “just right” for your flock and breeding goals, or you can let us know if there are particular crosses that especially interest you.

· Send one $75 deposit per reserved sheep (refundable if you end up choosing not to buy a lamb in the spring) to Lili Bookwalter, 20 Roberts Farm Lane, Putney, VT 05346.

· Once all the lambs are born you will have the opportunity to make your selection before the lamblist is officially posted on our website. We recommend keeping up to date by following along our Lambing Journal. That way you can mull over your choices before the list goes out.

· When you choose the lamb(s) that you would like to buy, please notify us immediately, and send a non refundable deposit equal to at least one third of the total purchase price.

· Once 1/3 of the purchase price is received and the check has cleared, the lamb will be marked “sold”. We can now begin the process of scheduling a delivery or pickup date.

· You may complete payment at your discretion, however all funds must be received before the animal leaves our farm. We will not deliver until payment has been completed. If you plan to pick up your sheep, you may arrive with cash in hand, but we cannot accept a check or other form of payment on the pickup date.

· If you see no sheep that interest you on our lamblist, we will refund your $75 reservation deposit.

Pricing

· Our baseline price for Registered breeding stock is $375

· AI Offspring will start at $475

Factors taken into consideration when determining the price of a sheep are: gender, color/ pattern, build, quality of fleece, parasite resilience, and maternal qualities on both sides of the family tree. Also, because our flock is so small, we are unable to offer a wide selection. We appreciate your patronage and offer a slight discount due to our limited selection and small flock size.

We will consider offering our breeding stock unregistered at $200 per ewe and $100 per ram. No quantity discounts are available for unregistered sheep and no AI offspring will sell unregistered. We also cannot guarantee that we will agree to an unregistered sale of a sheep, so please be sure to inquire in advance. For pet and fiber flock quality sheep, please check out our Pet and Fiber Sheep Sales page.

Getting Your Sheep Home

If you are unable to pick up your sheep, we do deliver! Deliveries within 20 minutes of our farm in Putney, VT are free. Otherwise rates are $8.00/ hour (including the return trip) plus the cost of fuel and a $25 handling fee. This covers up to 4 adults or up to 6 lambs.
